On Gratitude by Diana Ting Delosh

Thank You Owlet - Ink & Watercolor Illustration, Hand Lettering
© Diana Ting Delosh

It's the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, so here's a few thoughts on gratitude as an illustrator /author. I am most Thankful for Friends and Community. As someone who spends most days isolated in my studio in suburbia, I am thrilled to have found my tribe via: the CBIG, SCBWI and the LICWI. Not to mention connecting with an even bigger pool of artists/writers/creatives via Twitter.

CBIG, Children's Book Illustrators Group
After many years of trying to do it alone, I discovered CBIG through my sister, who had a friend, who was a member.  CBIG is a local NY metro area group. They invite children's book publishing professionals to their meetings, so members can grow as illustrators and of course make connections.

SCBWI, Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators
SCBWI is an international group that offers oodles of info and conferences. Over the years it's given me loads of networking opportunities with industry professionals.

LICWI, Long Island Children's Writers & Illustrators
I joined LICWI because I wanted to get serious about my writing. LICWI members meet monthly and may read their writing to the group and receive feedback. I'm still getting the hang of reading to a group. Nerve wracking. But the valuable feedback is worth it.

Twitter
Because sometimes I'm working in the studio by my lonesome and it's nice to feel connected to the world at large. Remember those illustrators/writers you met at the big conference, most likely they're on Twitter or Instagram. There are many Twitter art challenges to participate in. Or if you're too busy to participate, just view. Always inspirational, sometimes even motivating.

In fact, this blog and my Art Crit Group would have never formed if it weren't for friendships via CBIG and the NJ SCBWI June Conferences. So, a really Big THANK YOU to CBIG and the NJ SCBWI.

Just in case you're wondering, yes, all this connecting and socializing, both real and virtual, does help your  discoverability and may lead to opportunities and even commissions. But that's a topic for another post.

Here's to Friends and Community and a Happy Thanksgiving to ALL!

Hand Lettering Process Post by Diana Ting Delosh

A BEAST IN THE WOODS © Diana Ting Delosh.
Page 5 - Title page. A sneak peek from my Picture Book Dummy.
Hand lettering: Ink, old wide brush on watercolor paper. Bold, san serif, untamed, caps. Colored by bringing into PS making the black ink lettering clear and placing over a watercolor swatch of purple ink.

My process for hand lettering begins with questions. Does the words/phrase evoke an image, a mood? Sure you can hand letter anything but some words or phrases beg for special treatment. Take the word  BUNNY, what comes to mind? Sweet. Cute. How about BEAST? Something rough, primal, maybe even old monster movie-ish. The word Flourish: a verb or a noun, very organic, something herbaceous.

1: FLOURISH Sketch. I want it to feel organic, flow, vines floral, herbaceous - a script
Next I decide what type style. Does it feel like a serif, or san serif?   Caps or upper and lower case?  Is it a script font??? Bold or light? Formal or casual? Is there an attitude? Do the letters themselves suggest images that relate to the meaning? Is there room for decorative flourishes? Sketching & Doodling commence. I like to make the form of the letters follow the meaning of the words or story.

On to inking. Maybe with a fine tip pen or markers or brush - in black sometimes on watercolor paper, sometimes on vellum or bristol. It all depends on what I plan for it. The words dictate the style. Depending on the final usage I may do this a bit oversized. However I do prefer working to size whenever possible. I scan my inks as bitmap art (Black and white art or Black & White Document setting) minimum 600 dpi. Depending on the piece I may just save the scan for in case I screw up  when painting in the lettering or I may bring it into Photoshop to color.

3. FLOURISH finished colored art © Diana Ting Delosh. Painted the original line art on bristol paper with water-soluble transparent colored inks.

Finally the coloring. Sometimes I hand paint my line work with transparent colored inks, watercolors than scan the finished colored art and clean up. Easy peasy. Sometimes I bring my line art into Photoshop and digitally color it. First I change the mode to RGB or CMYK. Usually I work in  RGB. I can change the color of my lines with the Magic Wand tool. Uncheck contiguous, so every speck of black gets selected, and click on the black than select a color with the eyedropper tool and fill the outlines with the new color. I can then fill in the outlines with the paintbrush tool and multiply so my line art remains. Or I can select the line art with the magic wand tool, make it clear, like a stencil, and layer it over a watercolor wash. Sometimes it's almost all created in PS. So many ways to go...just have some fun with it. Below are more samples of my hand lettering.

One of my favorite sentiments. My design for my personal 2016 Christmas Card.
Available at greetingcarduniverse.com/dianascards
Hand lettering: Black marker on vellum. Peace: formal script made from olive branches. Creatures: Serif, U&LC with a swan for an"S" to represent feathered creatures. Big: Caps, sight flared serif with a reptilian flare for the "G" to represent scaled creatures. Small: sans serif, fuzzy, Caps with a little critter for the "A" to represent furred creatures. Scanned the inked lettering and would've painted them per my usual BUT my scanner crapped out. SO, rather than wait for the new scanner I took the line art into PS changed the black line to an Ochre and digitally colored them.

Title page from my Picture Book Dummy.
In the story, Ollie is distracted by fireflies. I decided that the title would be made up of glowing fireflies.
Hand lettering: Inked fireflies to form the title with a fine point pen. Bold, san serif, blobby, upper & lowercase. Colored by Painting in PS with a brush so the edges are fuzzy, like firefly glow.

Some Fun News: My Hand Lettering, FLOURISH is on page 19 in the Gallery pages of the book,

Happy 2017 Reboot

Rooster © Diana Ting Delosh
Ink, watercolor

Actually Happy Upcoming Year of the Rooster! The rooster year officially begins on January 28th. So if you've had a rough start to 2017 you can just reboot your goals and resolutions this Saturday. Like me, you've listed all the things that went right/wrong in 2016 and what you're going to do differently, back around January 1st. Blah, Blah, Blah New Year, ad nauseum. By now you've realized a new year is just an illusion and nothing has really changed. All the good and the bad of yesterday, last week, last month, last year still remains. The slate wasn't automatically wiped clean. Starting "FRESH" is just a mindset.

Pencil sketch. Fragment from my PB dummying that's all I can share for now.

Bummer? Not so fast. It means everything you did right is still in place, waiting for you to build on it. It also means you can just keep taking that next step and go onward. And since the New Year is just another day, you can always begin anew with a fresh mindset any day. No need to wait the whole year to review and reboot.
Be Bold, Be Unique © Diana Ting Delosh
Fun Quick Ink Brush hand lettered affirmation

In 2016, I trusted my instincts even when I was afraid I might flop. Usually it worked out really well. In 2017, I will continue to trust my instinct to be bold and unique. To clarify, I am talking illustration, writing, creative choices not playing in traffic or other risky behaviors. And to review and revise my life as I go.

Wishing everyone a wonderful creative, productive and prosperous 2017 / Year of the Rooster!

Quick Ink Watercolor
I'm very tempted to jump in and join the #illo_advent challenge on twitter, 25 Fresh Christmassy illustrations for the 25 days leading up to Christmas. BUT as I'm already 6 days behind perhaps not this year. Don't know what you're all up to but I'll be busy wrapping up all my loose ends for 2016. For my last post on this blog for 2016, here's a quick fresh Christmassy Illustration for the fun of it and some seasonal hand lettering. Looking forward to 2017.

Celebrate the Small Steps - by Diana Ting Delosh

Running Bunny in Spring © Diana Ting Delosh
Ink Brush, Watercolor, Digital
We've all heard the phrase, celebrate the small steps that make up the journey.  I knew what the words meant in an abstract way but spraining my ankle taught me to appreciate them in a literal sense. The road to being a picture book author /illustrator is a long circuitous marathon. Just when you think you're getting close to your goal there are a few more hurdles to jump and mountains to climb, maybe even a swamp or quagmire to navigate. Two steps forward, one step backward and onward you go, hopefully without falling into a ditch along the way.

OLLIE ALONE

Submitted to editors, art directors and agents? Pat on the back. Ditto,  promo postcard designed and printed. High fives all around when the mailing list is updated and the postcards are mailed. Go ahead, cheer for yourself, after all, most of the time you'll only hear crickets back. Get a rejection? Gasp, give yourself a hug and submit something out, ASAP to counteract the negative! Oh Joy, if you get a positive response - pass the yummies.

My Promo Postcard featuring my illustrations:
Front - Jabberwocky-Boy meets Octopus
Back - Boy, Book Bed & Cat

Created new illustrations, stories, dummies, experiments? I keep a running created list. Writing down what I've created cheers me on. Doesn't matter if it's a personal art, experiment or big commission they all make my list. Seeing the list grow is it's own reward.

Having some fun with Hand Lettering
All line art is hand drawn than digitally colored

Create, promote, submit and cheer for yourself and your buddies with or without chocolate. In a competitive field with few positive responses to balance the long waits, rejections and too many crickets, celebrating the small steps may be the antidote to self doubt. Be your own best friend along your journey.
